Volvo 5 cylinder Cars With VVT... Exhaust Cam Gear
question under the hood
hey, im new to the forum and i have a 94 volvo 850(non turbo) with 150K miles on it. i live in georgia and guess the car was made for the US. im 17 and am trying to learn about cars. this is my first car and i have stumbled upon something under the hood. this should be a picture of it. it is the silver pipe coming out of what i think is the exhaust. it connects to the air box. i don't know what its for, but its loose and i was hoping if anyone could tell me if it was important. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Not that important...tighten up what you can. It's to give yourself some "heated" air for your intake when it's cold outside. Only non-turbo's had these.

You can, and perhaps should. Inside of your airbox, the box with your air filter, is a thermostat that should switch between the hot air from the pipe you highlighted and cold air from the front of the car. On most non turbo cars of our age, I too have a '94, the thermostat has failed. When it fails it directs the air from the hot side to the intake.
It kills your fuel mileage and power.
Check the repair database for some pictures on how to jam the flap to the cold air position.

its not really a hole, you don't need to plug it.
