I used the 6" quick release, had just enough depth. They're not for heavy duty clamping, but perfect for this purpose.

The other half was the 11" swivel pad locking pliers.

The foot with the keeper access window cut out of it was a 3/4" EMT conduit coupler.

Looks like I left a bad link? Thanks for putting in a good one. That's the stuff. AST sold it as "gasket remover" for a while then according to the counter guys at the trade shop where I buy it, there was some kind of safety problem with the labeling so they had to re-name it varnish remover. Same stuff though, works great.
