Wait, do the fobs in this series have batteries? Could it simply need a $3 replacement from the nearest pharmacy?

Pretty much the typical message when the antenna ring goes bad. If I remember well, a new one will work without programing Have a look at the bottom of the page as well http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/showthrea ... tenna-Ring

The chips have multiple thousands of possible broadcast signal patterns. The antenna is just that, the receiver of a signal but also the pulser of a magnetic field that induces the current flow in the chip to power it for a thousand of a second for each magnetic pulse. No intelligence or programming exists in the key. The CEM does the key communication and once a recognized key chip is verified the CEM answers a request from the engine computer for run approval. I wish there was some easy way around this but there is not any easy defeat. Easily defeated is easily stolen and that is the point.

I had the same issue and it was the antenna ring. I ordered it from the dealer, but it did not have to be programmed to the car. You should be able to replace it with one from the junk yard.

Sorry, friend, you're looking at a new key and a tow to the stealership.
And possibly an antenna ring.
How did the key get damaged?

You can buy new transponder. It cheap enough.Jeff2776 wrote:the transponder is sh!t for sure. The glass that the transponder is encased in is shattered.
Just search for "ID48 Transponder volvo" on ebay.
There should be some about 4$.
Try to put it to the key and go for dealer or indy that can program keys.
In case of dealer do not tell that you put new transponder.
Tell them that key stops working and ask to reprogram it again.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer

My indie cuts me keys for $40, if I can wait for them to accumulate VIDA subscription work and leave the car with them for a week. Since they take me to the airport - this works out great.

So here are the facts,
1. Antenna ring is antenna ring, it is a dumb device, I have one glued under dash onto chip, now I use chipless keys
2. Key matches up with security box, I forget name, there is even a service that will add new keys to computer if you send one key and computer
3. Vida can sync up dim to ecu cem etc
On my 04 s60 and c70 I use chipless keys and mounted chip inside car
on the c70 I need to turn key to run, count to 2, then turn off, then start asap
Starts everytime
Try this on an intermittent start problem car
