Coasting or sitting at a stop sign the idle will sometimes increase and the car will lurch forward.
Happens in N too. Idle just increases to about 1800. Just for a couple secs then back to normal, 900-ish. A/C on or off.
Any ideas?
Erratic idle on 01 S40
I know it has only been a few hours since my post. But I had some time to search for similar issues and how they were fixed.
I just search for word "IDLE" and got 347 posts. after about 6 pages of finding the exact same problem over 5 or 6 years of posts, I became depressed. Because while there are lots of people with this problem, it seems that no one ever suggested a way to fix it.
Is there anyone here that works on their car?
EDIT: not sure this is it, but it could be... I pulled the clip on the Fuel Pressure Regulator and there seems to be a screen inside. Mine is broken and in pieces. Hope no pieces escaped
Also the FP reg has a 3 part "S" shaped vacuum hose. Mine is broken and cracked in several places. Hope you can get to Flicker. here is a link to pix. https://flic.kr/s/aHskGqXapU
I found the whole FP reg for $207.... OUCH. I just need the screen and the hose... I think. I am gonna keep looking, but I'll keep pull-a-part on my to-do list also.

The JY crushed the only S40 they had.... Had to buy one at Amazon. Installed the FPR and the car starts like a dream.... which was an issue, but not why I stated this thread. Test drive resulted in the original problem.
sitting at a stop sign, in D, foot on the brake, and the engine revs to 1500 and the car lurches forward for a few secs, then normal idle returns and lurching stops.
searches have yielded many similar problems, but not the exact issue. I did clean the IAC valve. Kinda tested it. I unplugged it and turned the key on. resulting voltage is 0.45v. Shouldn't it be 12v? Tried to start the car, but without the IACV electric plug connected, the car would not even start. During cranking I did see it jump to 11v. I am going to try to figure out a way to back-probe the connector and take a reading. But I don't know what i should get. word is if I just barely move the throttle cable the IACV should get the signal to close.... resulting in 0v?
Can anyone help me test this thing, mechanically and electrically?
