The coil packs were probably slightly off but unnoticeable and my wife's water pump was still working fine at that point, the bearings had started to whine.pvfjr wrote:I just had to replace 2 coils on my 99 S70. It was a project car than ran fine until the PO overheated it and blew the headgasket because he didn't keep his leaky radiator topped off.shiloh51933 wrote:bmdubya1198 wrote: I couldn't figure out why 3 of them went, battery was unconnected while working but she did have 160k.
I replaced one coil due to a misfire, and the car ran fine until it warmed up, then another coil went bad.Maybe the overheating of the engine was too much for them to bear.

The coils definitely can fail 'slow' deaths
The first trouble we ever had with our 1999 was in 2010 - after a school bus jump back, about 1 week later, one of the coils self-terminated - leaving us with a no start downtown in -20F weather.
