Add Remote engine starting to my 2016 V60?

Post by wysocki »

I just got a 2016 V60 and joined this forum! (so far a great day).
However, I don't have the feature on my car that allows me to use the remote opener to start the car from the outside. I know I can use the "On Call" feature from my phone, but I only have the trial period and they want a ridiculous fortune to subscribe to it. (Besides I'd have to enter a password each time I use the feature - what a pain).

I would really like this feature and I came across a site that has a remote starter for a surprising low price: http://www.volvowholesalepartsdirect.co ... 59842.html

The site is rather unclear about what's needed to actually implement this feature. Can anyone clarify this for me? Is it DIY-able?

That is link to software that removes that feature.
Right software is http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/produ ... 59842.html
So price is a bit different :)
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

When you say the software "removes that feature" you mean "adds that feature", right?
So all I have to do is buy this software (and somehow install it)? The hardware for it is already in place?

Doublebug is correct.

"Engine remote start remo" - $19.75

"remo" means "removal"... that product (software) removes (deletes) the remote start feature. See his link for the software that adds it.

Why would anyone want to pay to remove a feature? Anyway, thanks for the clarification!
Now if I buy and download the software, is that all I'd need to get the feature? Since I'm a DIYer, how do I install it?

I don't know the answers. But the questions you need to ask are

will Vida allow this software install?
does my keyfob support remote start?
does my Volvo require additional hardware?

It never occurred to me that this was something I could add after the fact. I had asked the dealer once about installing the "Homelink visor", and they told me that they couldn't because of wiring harness issues. All this despite the fact that I have seen people on various forums install one themselves in about 15 minutes. My only thought is that the service advisor confused it with something else where there were wiring harness issues, but my takeaway was that the dealer didn't want to be bothered adding options to cars that didn't come with it.

That being said, the remote start thing isn't cheap. I suppose I can see how it might be kind of handy in some circumstances, but I am not sure I would ever ask the dealer about it.

On the one hand, it would be nice to have the car warm by the time you get into it, if you live in a snow area.

On the other hand, warming up sitting still is horribly abusive to a modern engine. They're really a lot happier if you get in it, start it up, and immediately start driving. I know the shivering sucks, but it's much better for the car.

I think "Volvo On Call" Subscription allow the car the be connected on Internet, on Volvo "Special" Web Site, through 3G or 4G connection subscription.
Then, your smartphone can be connected to your car, through this special web site.
Volvo will never allow other external system to be connected on your car, due to security issues.
