'06 V70R Startup squeal / knock

Post by MSLV70 »

I've had a '98 V70 AWD for 4 years and decided to upgrade to an R. I plan on it being a daily driver. I bought something cheap knowing it would need a fair amount of work. I've still got the '98, so I'm not in a rush to get the R on the road.

I've got a fairly terrible sound on cold startup. It starts with a slight squeal and then turns in to a clacking/rattling. It goes away after about 5-20 secs and that range seems to be directly related to motor temp. Colder it is, longer it persists. I'm in Austin, so "cold" is currently mid 60's in my garage. Warm is 90's. Once the sound goes away, it drives fine.

I've disconnected the accessory belt, so all of that is out of the equation.

It's got 170k miles and the maintenance has been bad (at best).

I think it sounds like oil starvation, so I'm leaning towards just starting with the o-rings in the oil pan. I'm also replacing the entire PCV breather system.

I've spent some time searching the site, but haven't come upon anything that I think perfectly matches the sound I hear... but, it's hard to tell via a youtube video.

I don't know if it's related, but I also get a bit of surging while on brake when the AC is on.

Video/Audio attached. Any thoughts from the experts?

Thanks,
Matt

Oil starvation... when I start my 97 850 cold, I can hear the moment the cylinders get oil lubrication. It's between 1-2 seconds after the engine catches. The reason I mention this is that you said your problem happens on cold startup.

By cold, of course I mean "hasn't run for hours", not outside temperature.

The squeal doesn't fit with anything I know as a shade tree mechanic. To my ear, the initial cringy first seconds of cold start I'd describe as minor clattering/mechanical/machine, not at all squeal.

... after some thought, I believe this may be a bad evap canister, which typically makes a moaning sound on late 90s P80 Volvos. Search the site for more. I'd post links, but I'm on my phone and it's difficult.

Nevermind on the canister. I read '98. I'm getting old.

That is with the serpentine belt off?
If so, the first and easiest thing to look and listen at the Tbelt tensioner and the belt itself (for rubbing)
Remove the T belt cover, have someone start it cold, look and listen if it's coming from inside there.

If not then I guess it must be oil starving and you have a lot of work in front of you to do!.
A new breather system, then the pan pulled and all of it in there either completely cleaned and perhaps also a new PU tube installed then re-installed with new O-rings.

It would seriously help to post what year R this is!

I've already got the oil pan reseal kit and PCV kit on the way... That was my first thought as well.

I appreciate the quick response.
