Is the car turbo or natauraly aspirated?

Did you check timing belt area?

Lifters can cause ticking,not knocking.

It is not a turbo. And we did check the timing belt, it's is in very good shape, it obviously had been replaced at some point.

Can you isolate where the knocking sound is coming from?

From inside the engine or outside?

It's coming from the engine compartment and most likely the engine. It runs real rough, and has very little power. All this started at a stop sign, car ran smooth and then I stopped at a stop sign and all of a sudden this loud knock noise started and it barely made it home. It was fine and then boom, it wasn't. Could it be misfiring?

You should probably run or have a compression test run on all 5 cylinders to rule out a head gasket problem

The loud noise could also be a broken exhaust manifold or something internal broken...bearing or. Connecting rod, but that's really rare on these cars

Just realized that the serpentine belt was really frayed. Also looks as if the timing belt might have "skipped" because we found pieces of the serp belt in the timing belt housing. Would huge misfiring be caused by bad timing?

If it skipped more than 2 teeth it bent some valves

Time for re-checking timing and possible compression test afterwards.

Bent valves should explain no power condition and loud knocking.
