2000 S70 Starting Trouble

Post by Samtara1 »

I have a 2000 S70 SE, non-turbo, autotrans w/5spd with 128K miles. I have had car for 2 years and it has been great other than minor/usual repairs for car this age. My trouble is the car began to have issues starting about a month ago. I had previously replaced the PNP switch along with the ABS module due to other issues. However, now it seems that 1 out of every 4 times I have to turn on car and if it doesn't start or turnover, I turn key in "on" position and move from Park to Neutral and back to Park and car starts right up. My battery is over 4 years old and tested borderline good so I replaced it but still have the same problem periodically. Any suggestions? No codes, no CEL...possibly the "antenna immobilizer ring"? I used two different keys and it still does the same with both keys but it does start most of the time and real strong, even after shifting gears back and forth...just annoying but it is a 16 year old car.

I'm no expert by far, but I might look at your grounds, especially your ground straps from the back of the motor to the car body. The fact that by rowing your shifter seems to solve the no start does point towards your PNP you said there are no codes (and I assume no flashing arrow). However this could be just an anomaly.

I had a no start on my 1999 S70 over the weekend. Turned out it was related to the ground wire on the starter. I added a separate ground from the battery to the starter and have not had any problems since.

Great suggestion...I recently replaced the positive battery cable (6-months ago) from battery to starter. Maybe it has come loose? Since I have already changed the PNP I was really stumped.

Turn out it was the little plastic button on shift knob...classic design flaw they are known for!
