v70 base pnp switch or?

Post by codtay56 »

i just purchased a 1999 volvo v70 pretty sure its the base version. Had a few problems to begin with. power steering was scratchy(previous person put regular fluid in it) the battery was dead or shot. and most importantly its stuck in winter mode. she bought the volvo this way and i honestly couldnt tell you how long she drove on it for. still feels like it drives and shifts fine. no slips. but id like to get it out of the winter mode. quick searches showed me the row method. it didnt work. unless maybe the button its self is stuck just open and not working. another quick search showed me that there was some recall work done with the Recall 155: Electronic Throttle System Software Upgrade that causes the car to go into winter mode. not sure if i should drive 2 hours to the nearest volvo place to get that fixed in hopes itll fix it or try something else. code that pops is p0656 power train control module read only memory.

i guess long story short. im stuck in winter mode and the row method didnt work as far as i know. code p0605 what else can i do? i purchased it for 500$ at 181k miles. did i lose out ?

For a driving car at $500 you did well!

You can test the PnP with a voltmeter to see if it's working but it's pretty easy to take apart and ascertain function or problem.

Any Visit to the dealer us going to run you $1000 or more plus travel, you are better off finding a good independent to work on this car. Dealers don't want to work on 17 year old cars, basically.

The 1999-2001 have an early electronic throttle body that lasts about 100k mikes. You are probably driving in your second one.

What are your plans for this car? If you need 10000 miles a year out if her we will need to get you to stage zero.

Lastly, these cars have an interference timing belt engine which ruins the head if the timing belt breaks. You should be on your third belt by now, but people often neglect this and leave the surprise to the best owner. You can't tell the belt age by looking, so you have to examine your karmic balance.

I bought a used cat from justin on this board, who lowered his price after I sent him a confirming email he missed. I sent him the original offer, and my cat broke 1 month later, in my driveway, after a 2000 mile trip. Karmic balance.

thanks for the fast response! i honestly doubt they did any of the required fixs at certain mileage as the oil is as black as it can be. and you know if they didnt do the oil changes they very well didnt do timing belts or anything. im going to be taking out the pnp switch today to see if i can just clean it or if ill have to find a used one to just rule that part out or not. think it might be a faulty abs module? i dont have any other lights other then the orange arrow.

Search forum for 2 things:

1. The infamous PNP thread, very long but the bottom line of what I did:
- Removed the copper U-cup thing, filed it flat and swapped position with another U-cup.
- Iposted the photos in that infamous thread.

2. Xemodex.

At 180K, you still have another 200K miles to go. The 5-cyl is a good engine.

I hate to tell you the obvious but in the center console, there are 3 buttons:
S (Sport), E(Economy), W(Winter).

Hit either "S" or "E" and see what happens. It is in the owner's manual.

Does your cruise control work?
Do you see see "--------" in your speedometer at times?
This is what I saw on a bad ABS module. (along with the orange arrow).

Or like cn90 said. See if your "W' button is stuck down. Pull up with tweezers or needle nose.
Base model so I don't think he has the "S" "E" or "W". Only "W"

Yeah it's the na model. Just base. No S or E mode. I took off the whole console to get to the w buttons wiring. It's not stuck from what I can tell. Disconnecting reconnecting and rowing didn't work. I might have aligned the pnp switch wrong but I doubt it with the reverse lights working and able to reverse and drive just fine. When I put it into L I feel like it has more power from a stop then putting it into D. I don't know what else to do. Think I need to change the ECM or TCM? And if I do is it a plug and play or not ?
