Hello all, I purchased a 2005 S40 non turbo from auction yesterday, 105,000 miles, had all service records, nice car. I checked car before driving off, started right up had coolant in the reservoir, just a bit, now I know I should have looked closer. So I got in the car and started driving, no check engine light, temp gauge good, stayed in the middle. So Im now on freeway and thought lets see what this non turbo has, cause I have a S60 turbo at the house as a DD and I like it, but the non turbo is OK. Long story short, I had been driving for about 10 minutes and at 80/70 mph the car started to lose power all in about 5/10 seconds I then motioned to the side of the road and noticed the car had shut off, still coasting I pulled over and car would not start, towed to house no start, woke up this morning no start.. I did fill the reservoir with water when stalled on side of road and it seemed that there was no coolant to begin with because it took a lot to fill. Theres no oil in water or water in oil at this point, probably wont have those sighs regarding the way it happened(if I blew a head gasket). Im gonna do a compression test right now cause I don't have a leak down tester,
As far as the car turns over, when I turn key it just turns, today I heard a tiny sputter like it wanted to turn over but no fire. So my question is did I damage the block/lower motor, how to tell or inspect? And should I just replace the head gasket/ and send head to shop and obvious other while in there? Hoping I didn't ruin the lower engine... Much appreciated all who can advise me on this and for reading this, thanks.
2005 S40 ran on no coolant died now wont start

I just went out to do a compression test but found about a 1/4 inch of water sitting in the cylinder, I would say that's a bad head gasket and probably mess up my tester if attempted. I don't know what to do about the water, I don't have compressed air, guess ill suck it out tomorrow and then spray some oil in there and order head gasket. Really was looking for some advice on the lower engine, how to inspect, what should I expect?

Did you find the write- up on Swedesepeed? If so, that's the only one I know. Unfortunately, there is no coolant level sensor in these cars. Because of the issue that happened to you and others, I'm working on a solution for that. I'm sorry this happened to you right after getting the car.

Thanks for the advice, I did go to swedespeed, could not find really anything to help. Then I tried to register and kept getting timed out before I could complete process, pissed me off. Yea coolant level sensor, I was wondering why I didn't get an idiot light......Just hope I didn't mess the block up, guess Ill get a straight edge ruler and check it once head is off. Job doesn't seem that difficult on this motor, but sure would like to find some kind of tutorial to take the guess work out of it.

There's a printed aftermarket shop manual as well as the Swedespeed writeups and finally there is the REAL VOLVO TECH MANUAL, VIDA. If you're going into Volvo DIY, you really need to set up a full Chinese clone DiCE / VIDA scanner. Try again with Swedespeed; they're good folks.
