Accident in my '98 V70

Post by SeattleVolvoGuy99 »

Hi Friends,
On Thursday, an older gentleman darted in front of me in a neighborhood with blind intersections. I T-boned him and totaled his 98 Saturn. My '98 V70 fared pretty well. I've attached a few photos. The obvious is that I'll need a new hood and bumper. What I want to fix today, however, is the headlight. The glass protecting the bulbs busted all out...the housing appears undamaged, however. The high and low beam at first were still working but now both of those have blown. Am I going to need a complete headlight assembly? Should I do both headlights if I replace one? Btw, I already have Front Passenger Side Replacement Parking/Signal Lamp Assembly. Thanks for your input.

Sorry to hear about your accident. :(

You don't need a complete headlight assembly - you need the glass (or "lens", I guess they call it), the clips and the gasket. I think I've seen kits at FCP - I think they're ÜRO, but that shouldn't matter in this case. :)

Yup. :)
Make sure there's no damage to the rest of the assembly though - you don't to spend 50 bucks, just to have it leak and need a whole new headlight later on. Been there, done that on one of my previous 850s. :)

Misha, yes, both airbags are fine and I have the blinker/position light casing already.

Sommerfeldt, that's why I'm wondering if I should just get this one:

Only because, while the casing doesn't appear to be damaged, it could very well be bent slightly that could alter the ability of the new lense to seal correctly, am I right?

I wouldn't go too far getting parts until you have the car checked underneath. From the pictures the RH front wheel looks like it is at a weird camber and the LH headlight also looks like it is sitting out too far at the top. You may need to check the sub-frame and see it is not bent as well as the control arms. Also check the plastic slam panel that the headlights attach to. It may well be damaged as there is not much holding it in place.

OP already listed hood and bumper and said he has the blinker assy., and the question was about the headlight...

The headlight might be damaged, even though it looks OK. If you can't see any damage, it's a judgement/budget call to either get just the lens or the whole thing. :)

Neil has good points, though - you need to be sure that nothing vital's been bent out of shape. Even if it feels like it rolls fine, have it checked out. It looks like the bumper pushed the headlight up, but like Neil said, get the slam panel checked.

It shouldn't be since impact wasn't strong and damage isn't bad. That said....it wasn't even close to damage control arms and subframe.

About headlight....i would remove it and inspect it's casing closely.

Yup, that sounds about right from the pictures. Looks like OP drove it away from the accident too, so it's probably okay. Other than the cosmetic stuff. It's never fun to see a banged up Volvo. :(
