2012 XC90 FWD. I changed my cabin air filter this weekend. I'm glad I did this service myself because there were filters in both slots, which is probably not what Volvo intended. The dealer missed this and so did my independent mechanic. I removed the the thinner non-IAQS one and replaced it with the thick Mann CUK 2855 charcoal filter. Thanks to Mann's instructions I realized there are 2 slots.

I bought my car about a month ago. There was a musty smell, I know old cars have a certain smell but this was different. The filter must have been the original!

So I removed the filter and started the the car and allowed it to reach operating temp. I then turned the fan on high and turned on the heat. I then sprayed Lysol into the chamber a couple times cycling the knob to run the Lysol through the different vents. I then turned on the AC and sprayed away again. I did this for about an hour, cycling back and forth between AC and heat and position.

Installed a new filter and once the Lysol smell wore off in about and hour, the car smelled nice and fresh with just a hint of old car smell.

Replace at 15K miles...older 850's didn't have them...one of the main causes of the A/C evaporator crapping out.

I change mine every fall after the leaves go. I sit in the car with climate control the most in the winter, so it makes sense to me. Plus I put 25,000 miles on my car every year. The $15 on a decent is worth the fresh air. I can definitely tell when it's starting to go.

Yes it does. I did it on the 97 850 overhaul/project.

All you need to do is to pull the old plastic unit out of the 850 and fit one from a 98-00 S/V 70 with the filter.

I took the opportunity to pull the wiper arms and the cover off from under the windshield area and clean all the accumulated crap out from there and clean out the 4 drain tubes (2 in the air inlet are under the plastic cover and 2 from the plastic cover) and the area around the cold air intake flap. Also took the opportunity to clean and grease the wiper motor and assembly so it ran smoother.

Btw, I just talked to my Volvo parts guy (he's owned 10 850ies over the years) and said never to use the active charcoal filter because especially on the 850 the blower motor wasn't strong enough and eventually got hot enough to catch fire. Volvo stopped selling them (at least in europe) for that reason.

I do them about once a year, usually in the Spring, that works out to about 15,000-20,000 miles for me.
