850 heated seats

on with the list of things that dont work on the 850¬!
last owner said the heated seats were a god send in the winter , lights come on on the switch, but seats dont get warm , problem i have is im never in the car very long so dont know how long they are meant to take to get warm ??
have heard stories of connection problems and not the actual heating element itself , just hoping this is true......

you should feel them after 2-3 Minutes, maybe quicker if you don´t have leather/suede.

Check if you have 12V under the seat (be sure to get the right connector, the SIPS-bag is wired in the seat as well). If you do have 12 Volt there check if the temp feeler has slid out of the seat. if not it is likely your heater mat is broken.
If you don´t have 12 Volt at the seat you are lucky because you might have a Connection Problem which is a lot easier than replacing a broken heater mat.

There are 2 types of wiring to the seats and I don't know when they changed. The 93 850 we had had 2 wires then ran up to the seat heater mat from the middle under the seat. There is a hollow in the under foam that these went up into. Problem was they were unsupported and over the years with the seat being moved it either breaks the wires or most often the connectors to the mat up inside the foam which is a pain to access even with the seat out. The newer version has the wires better supported at the back of the seat but again they can just fail with age. I'm not sure if the old style mats are even available any longer, I do believe the are obsoleted but not 100%. I think I have read that the later style can be substituted, but it requires the seat cover to be removed. I believe there is a how-to somewhere on MVS.

I parted out a seat a few month back and have to say it´s a real pita. Can´t imagine putting that upper cover on properly. The lower one shouldn´t be too hard.

Common misconception. They are mechanically activated in the 850 and 98 S70. SIPS became electronic in the 99 MY cars.

As for repairing the seat, test the ohms at the seat connector for resistance, and check for power on the car side of the harness with the switch on. I had a blown fuse in my S70 as well as a wire that fell off of the thermostat in the seat.[/quote]

Its a 1997 car , does anyone know what colour connector it should be ?
Ive checked the fuses today and they are all fine , both lights come on ,on the switches but nothing happens on either seat .
Ill have a play with them in the morning see if the connector is getting 12v

Black if I remember right. I converted over to the 2000+ seats. Equally as painful setup, but newer and was cheaper solution that was more comfortable.

Well dig under the drivers seat today and the red wire has come off the thermostat, so Fingers crossed once this is sorted it will work, havent had a chance to have a look at the pasengers seat yet ........
