One trick to prevent dipstick from breaking...
ROTATE the dipstick a bit to break the bond between the O-ring and the housing, then pull it.

My dipstick broke in literally the same place as yours chexny, mine made it to 235K though. Speaking from experience on this, its much easier to just order the new style dipstick and tube then trying to track down the old style (some Volvo dealers seem to forget that they made cars in the 90s lol). Replacement is super easy, its just the one bolt underneath the intake manifold that holds the dipstick tube on.

CC: I just picked up this morning the 850 dipstick (1271920) from the dealer ($22) and it is stamped 1271921 as CN90 showed earlier. For now that will do. Btw the parts guy kind of hesitated and asked which car I had. I explained and he agreed if I was replacing a round dipstick which I am that it should fit for 98 v70.

Also thanks cn90 for the twisting suggestion but it actually broke in my hand when I was wiping it clean. I decided to wipe up by the handle b/c it had that white gooey stuff on it and I guess in trying to wipe around it I cracked it. Such is life with an old car. The photo was after I put it back in.

Yeah, the old ones just break, always right there, there isn't much you can do about it ...

Two tricks
1. JB Weld a nail, screw, pencil, whatever, overnight, being very careful not to get any on the inside of the tube.
2. CAREFULLY, so you don't push it down further drill a hole into it and then thread a screw. I started with the smallest fine bit I had, then used a second larger one to avoid putting too much pressure on it. Worked like a charm

For removing a stuck (broken) dipstick you can also just remove the one bolt that holds the tube in, it is just under the front edge of the intake manifold there, and then pull the whole thing out, tube and dipstick together.

I came to this thread to find a solution to my dipstick problem - the plastic part separated completely, and the dipstick is not even visible, it's so far down the tube. Thank you both for the suggestions.
Too bad the plastic is so brittle. It did last 203,000 miles and 17 years, though.
Ebay has a replacement for 7.50 including shipping. Hecho en China, most likely.
For what it's worth, my '99 V70 has a flat dipstick, and my '98 V70 T5 parts car has a round stick type (which, naturally, is missing
the plastic handle.)

Got this problem myself; Original DS handle broke, leaving me a stub though. I'm going to fix this by under-drilling holes in both ends, heating up a long screw, driving it in on one end, let it cool, then heat up the other end and twist the handle back on and let it cool. This ensures the melted plastic firmly bites into the threads and makes for a strong joint.

Actually, it is easier to remove the dipstick housing and push the broken dipstick out.
