1995 855, rumbling/Grinding noise when driving

Post by lcc014 »

I heard a rumbling and grinding noise when driving this morning to work. It got louder (noise increase with speed) at 20 mph or faster. Otherwise, no noise. My wife said it was on passenger side.

What could this noise be ?

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

I'm new to Volvo but my guess would be a bearing or a cv joint has failed.

Do the symptoms change at all when turning?

Noise only followed the speed of car, no different in going straight or turning. Passenger side axle is about 6 months old. Wheel bearing is about 230k miles old.

Thanks.

If it is a wheel bearing it should get loader as you turn left or right and it loads up the bearing on the wheel on the outer side of the turn, So if you are turning left it will load up the right and obviously the reverse. If this is not the case it may well not be a wheel bearing. It may be a CV joint, but as it may be from the right side it may the carrier bearing on the RH axle. Some of the re-manufacturers do not replace this bearing so it could fail earlier than it should. Re-manufactured axles can be a crap shoot.

Have you have any brake work done recently? Could be the brake backing plate rubbing on the rotor or a sticking brake caliper.

Could be a loose stone caught between the backing plate and the surface of the rotor on the offending side of the vehicle?

I will take the wheel off to check brake, thanks for the suggestion. How can you check the RH axle ?

Thanks.

Jack the car up and put it on axle stands at the front. Put the transmission in neutral (use the over-ride switch with key in ignition).

Crawl under the car and look up at the bearing just inside the inner CV boot on the RH side. The bearing is in a carrier. Spin the RH wheel and try to feel for roughness in the bearing.

Otherwise, if the repair was done at a shop, take it back to them to diagnose!

I'd check the rear brakes, the calipers freeze on these cars, mine were in
ridiculously bad shape - see the picture on page 2:

I did jack up rear wheels and turned them by hand, no grinding or rumbling sound. I will take off rear wheels to check both calipers. So far, only passenger front wheel had grinding sound when turn wheel by hand.

Thanks.
