HI, I am able to read the the OBD1 and 2 codes, which are not specific enough to determine why my auto transmission is not shifting above 3rd gear. I get the flashing arrow, etc. I have changed out sensors due to specific codes generated, But the p0730 and the a2 322 keeps repeating, but does not give enough specific info. I have used the Auto Transmission self diagnosis specific item testing circuits. Those say all Tranny solenoids are working, etc. But when driving they do not.
Im not sure dropping the tranny pan & replacing the TC solenoid & valve body will take care of the shifting problem.
I am hoping Brick-diag free or TOAD would give me Volvo specific code info.

Hi Tryingtobe,
Thanks. I did 5 drain and fills. Shifting got better, but wouldn't shift above 60, so flashing arrow would come on. Then put 2 tubes of Dr. Tranny eliminate TC shudder. Shifting got much smoother, no flashing arrow at 35mph, but would start flashing when shifting above 60 mph. Did a Lubrigard tranny flush, complete flush. Back to problems shifting around 35 mph and above 60 mph. Sounds like I will need to find a low mileage used tranny & a shop to install it. Or look for a manual 850.
Thanks again, any thoughts on the flush results or ideas?

When the transmission is slipping, rarely will any fluid change will make it better for any length of time.
I put in a manual transmission myself since I couldn't trust a 200k automatic transmission.

Sadly, I too support the paths forward for an 850 with an auto trans is to go manual or offload the problem child and call it a day.
That would be my route should my trans decide to kapoot.

For future use...
1. As far as Brick-Diag Free v0.0.6.6 goes, it probably would have reported the 3-2-2 error (like your A2 322), except that it would probably have given the English explanation "Gear 2, incorrect ratio". At least that's how Brick-Diag Free reported the 3-2-2 error on my 97 850 T5. Note: Brick-Diag uses a cable like Vol-FCR uses (not an ELM327 tool).
2. I have no idea if TOAD could have been coaxed into reading the Volvo specific codes of your transmission (prior to scraping). Note: TOAD uses an ELM327 tool (not a cable like Vol-FCR uses).
3. volvo850diag reports the following, since the 322 error can be associated with either P0732 or P0730.
AT-322 -- Gear 2, incorrect ratio [P0732] / Alternatively, on earlier models: Gear Ratio Info Incorrect [P0730].
4. Further diagnostic aids:
a. "auto trans diagnosis.pdf" in the 1995 Volvo_850.zip download at MVS has a section on "DTC 322/P0730: GEAR RATIO INFORMATION INCORRECT".
b. OTP Volvo 850 DVD documents relating to your particular 850's transmission. If I had the problems you've described, I would have studied the appropriate Power Transmission document on this DVD thoroughly for clues.
