850 Turbo starts once, but not twice

Post by Nevada1906 »

Evening all.

My 95 850 Turbo will start and drive normally, but if I shut it off - whether it's only a minute after I started the car or after driving for two hours - it won't restart. It'll crank, and there's fuel at the rail, but no fire. Sometime later in the day, I can restart it.

Codes 120 (TPS), 400 (EGR) and 117 (ECT) came up on a scan, so I replaced the TPS & ECT, cleaned out the EGR & IAC valves and put in a new PNP because I had a flashing arrow on the dash and figured - why not?

Now, the CEL's still on, code 120's still coming up and the car idles a little rough but drives normally - but if I shut it off, I'm there for the day.

Can anybody point me in the right direction here?

Thanks.

rspi,

Thanks for the link. I had blasted the TPS connector with some contact cleaner earlier today, and it seems to have worked. I just started it up right now - it caught, held a nice, smooth idle and the CEL's off.

Update.

I just drove the car around, and everything was normal. No CEL, had a smooth & steady idle, accelerated properly. Drove it around to get it warm and shut it off.

No restart.

Here's what I've got so far:

- It cranks strong and normal.
- Battery is a two-year-old Duralast Gold that tested 100% a week ago.
- Car has fuel at rail, and I can hear the fuel pump spool up when I turn the key - every time.
- No CEL - I installed new ECT, PNP and TPS yesterday, and the rest of the car's sensors are less than three years old.
- Cleaned out the EGR and IAC valves yesterday.

I noticed that when I started it the first time today, it took about twice as long as normal to light off.

It seems to be a part that functions during startup, but not during operation. Like the part gets shocked into working first thing in the morning when it's cold, but only that one time. I don't think it's the 103 fuel pump relay because as I said, I can hear the pump working and I have fuel at the rail.

At this point, I'm thinking maybe the wiring going into the fuel injection relay is screwy somehow. I replaced the relay earlier this year, but left the wiring as in the picture. It's never given me any problems to date like this.

Thanks for any suggestions on this matter.

That main fuel injection relay....who messed with it,why the wires are melted and WHY it is zip-tied to a turbo hose instead of being attached to fan shraud???

Is it the grey one....i don't see well on the picture?!
