These come from the factory?? They sure look like they got chooched by the valves.

Also, what the heck is this?

That's funny. T5 pistons are more dished, have factory flycuts and they achieve LOWER compression.

Can you dial in EXTREME or INSANE with that boost controller?

It's a B5244T3 I believe. Glovebox and carfax indicate that the 3rd owner reported it as a loss to insurance at 157,000 miles. The 4th owner bought the car, drove it 40,000 miles, failed an emissions test, then began a regular relationship with a local Volvo shop starting with "Engine block" in 2008. All signs indicate they used the stock part and didn't do anything weird, but I'm gonna swing by there tomorrow and see if they have anything interesting.

T5 are the hi po versions with a bigger turbo. Not usually in XCs unless someone has fitted one for fun.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure we have many threads of posters with dinged pistons which are stock marks.

This is a highly technical forum and we appreciate you using the correct word " gnarly" instead of " chooched"

Oh, the pistons look plenty skookum other than where they got chooched.

Head's in the shop now, parts in the mail.

Back from the shop! Total bill ~1100 with the valves. Cleaned and decked. Gonna start putting it back together as soon as I get the all the old PCV and timing belt doobabs off.

Everything is back on... but it won't fire. Fuel rail has fuel pressure. Turns just fine by hand with the spark plugs out. I locked the cams, lined up the marks on the sprockets with the marks on the crankshaft. The CPS only goes on one way, there's no way to put it on backwards. Everything is plugged back in, and the key turns the starter, which is turning the engine, but no go. I thought I heard it fire once, but it was just once.

EDIT: Oops. Forgot the timing belt tensioner. Lemme try that again.

EDIT 2: Tensioned correctly now. Still won't start.

In the morning let's give it some ether to breathe and diagnose spark or fuel.

I found it took 30 seconds of cranking on my 1999 when I did the PCV to come back to life from disassembly

Sprayed some starting fluid into the brake boost vac port on the intake. Cranked some more, still no start. Whereugo spark?
