While back i made a thread on here about a Running rich problem I had that was causing major loss of power. Life happened and I had to take a step back from volvo and bought a few cars in between. After a brief run in with a little bit of kidney cancer I have found a new lease on life and want to show the volvo the same love.
So yesterday I bought a used battery just enough to get the car into my garage so I could work on it. Car started a few times ran very roughly but would not hold idle without help from tapping the gas. After it warmed up and spit and spuddered it started to go back into the rich smell and loading up to point of stalling. Skip to today. I cleaned garage out to make room for volvo to be torn open. Today it would not start. It would crank and i hooked up jumper cable to keep battery charged and held a solid 13.5-14 volts so I had plenty of juice. Eventually I decided to use my truck and push the volvo into my garage (my driveway is very steep.) Now she is safe and sound inside.
Before all this happened I was throwing three codes. And it has been a while so I am kinda having to relearn again as well.
The codes where. P0117 (engine coolant temp sensor low input
P0131 02 sensor low voltage and P0325 Knock Sensor 1
Then I wrote a note that says Circuit bank 1. Not sure what that referred to, the 02 sensor or the knock sensor.
I am kinda starting to think that it sounds like the catylitic converter may be clogged up. because if memory serves me right I was getting some smoking from the exhaust side of turbo.
Thanks for any help in advance and looking forward to bringing the old girl back to life.

That P0117, which I got once, will prevent the car from starting. Have you checked out your sensor? Mine was leaking coolant and it was a corroded mess... So I would suggest replacing that coolant temp sensor and giving her a good ol' lawnmower syndrome start and see if she cranks. It feels violent, but the P80 can handle it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1wLxVZSTXc
By the way, all the guys on here are going to suggest you go OEM https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/133187 ... -9186486G/. I believe in OEM stuff after wasting away many hours redoing work so I'm not opposed to OEM parts. But, full disclosure, I've got the FAE one in there https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/7670/E ... r-9186486/and it's been OK for about a year. I probably got lucky... I do have an OEM that I will install immediately if I get a P0117 or a P0116 again
If you look around here, the knock sensor is a doozy. It's a pain to remove... But the sensor itself doesn't usually go bad and I don't think it would keep your car from starting, but I may be wrong there. Here's a good thread with information https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/vie ... hp?t=56801 and https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... hp?t=57293.
I once was getting a lot of 02 sensor codes on my brother's Mini Cooper and I cleaned the hell out of the connectors with MAF Sensor Cleaner, let them dry, and the codes never came back.
But more importantly, thanks for sharing that personal news. I can't imagine what that feels like, but knowing that you're feeling better, that's wonderful to hear. Thanks for sharing that. It's truly inspirational!

After reviewing my threads and other misc information based on what I did before. Pretty sure my turbo is toast. Explains almost all the symptoms I was having. Gonna tear into it tonight and see what I can see. I found a used turbo locally for 100 dollars which would still be cheaper then paying someone to look at it.
I think the stock turbo on this car is a TD04HL-13G but want to make sure before I buy turbo. Can anyone weigh in on that?

I don't see anything pointing to turbo and certainly it won't cause a no start
I would hold off on the turbo dissection.
Ignore that knock sensor code. That's from rough running and you get it sorted out it will disappear.
Spark fuel compression timing. Go through each, don't throw parts, especially turbo

I don't think it is the turbo either. The ECT and it's connector would be #1 on my list and only OE for that part. Following that then it could be the MAF (try un-plugging it), check the plugs you are using (again only OE in my opinion and gapped to a tight 0.028").
Check there is no oil leaking into the distributor cap from a cam seal leak, dry it out and make sure the contacts are all good.
When were the plug leads last swapped?
Like I said I don't think the turbo is the issue, but I have a good used 13G under my work bench from a 98 V70XC if anyone needs one. Bought as a spare for the 98 I used to have.
When were the O2 sensors last swapped? They and the ECT are the 2 main issues in my experience of running rich, followed by the MAF.
Neil.

O2 was swapped less then 5k ago. But was not a Bosch unit. Tonight I got a little crazy and started tearing into car. Turbo pipe is full of oil. Like caked and dripping. Plus half the vacuum lines were brittle to point of breaking. Even if turbo is not toast I have a major leak somewhere in system. Will post some pics tomorrow.
Gonna find some replacement vacuum lines. And I would be interested in that turbo. Send me a pm with price. My zip is 43055 if u don't mind shipping.

Not gonna lie wish I had looked here before I tore apart. But these vacuum problems need, fixed either way. Any good recommendation s for lines. Or a chart to what size for each hose. Is silicone hose good for these.
