2008 2.5T engine shudder stuttering at high speed

Post by hu5ker555 »

2008 S60 2.5T, 163k miles

At highway speeds (roughly 60 mph), if I try to accelerate significantly the engine shudders/stutters/stumbles and I have to back off the gas. At one point, the check engine light flashed but then went away. The engine idles just fine and there is no check engine light on. My first try will be to clean the MAF. Then I may try to pull codes (even though there is no CEL on). I might also try replacing all spark plugs.

Any other suggestions/comments?

From past posts, seems similar to one (not all) ignition coil failure. No need to replace all as these don't wear like the spark plugs. Just get one and replace one by one then test. Also look at the cables going to the coils, sometimes they get crushed under the cover.

Thanks. I cleaned the MAF but no improvement. Will replace the spark plugs next. Then will try your suggestion using one new ignition coil (trial and error).

Could it be a fuel delivery or turbo-related issue?

You're guessing, these cars require a code reader, it was the first thing I bought when I got my volvo, can't do much without it.!

I have a code reader that works on my S80, but not on my S60. I took it to O'Reilly and they couldn't get their code reader to work either. Said my OBD port might be broken.

Probably just a fuse..check them. The OBD port is just wires to the ECU

My cheap Autel OBD2 (MS300) reader won't connect. O'Reilly's wouldn't connect either. So I tried Autozone. Theirs worked...misfire on cylinder 4.
I replaced all 5 spark plugs and things seem much better. Will give it the full test later today.

Any suggestions on an OBD2 code reader? Anyone else have problems with an Autel?
