Hi,
This is probably of minor importance, but i was just wondering if this is normal or what (1998 v70).
Yesterday i had to go out early and it was raining quite a bit so i would have to turn the headlights on before leaving (NJ Law). Before that though i stayed in the driveway to let the car warm up for a couple minutes, and turned the radio on. The LCD backlight came on as usual, no issues. But then, as i got ready to back out of the driveway, i turned the headlights on and noticed that the backlight of the radio got dimmer when turning on the headlights. I thought that was strange so i turned the headlights off again, and the backlight got brighter again, then turned them back on again and the backlight again dimmed. It was also light enough outside (daylight) so there was no change in the lighting in the interior of the car when the headlights came on that otherwise could have made the backlight just 'appear' to get dimmer, so it was definitely getting dimmer when turning the headlights on.
I did not notice this before, but then again i never looked at the radio when turning the lights on before either.
Any thoughts on this, as to why this happens, and if it is normal or not ?

I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Yes it does dim. Total by design.

Most car stereos have a dedicated wire in the harness that signals the LCD/LED screen to dim when the headlights are switched on. Reason being, during the daylight hours in possible direct sunlight you need more intense backlighting to see the readout easier on the stereo. At night or in inclement weather when you switch your headlights on the auto dimmer lowers the intensity to a level similar to the instrument lights for easier interpretation.
Always first off the line, while all the cool people are still staring at their phones.
