05 v70 xc shudders when put in reverse

Post by dgcantrellsr »

I'm trying out a 05 V70 xc w 132k and when you put it in reverse it shudders and vibrates the whole car. Don't do it in any other gear. How do these things act when trans is starting to go?

Your problem fits bad front engine mount (under crank pulley) and upper torque mount worn out. I am assuming it isn't shuttering for 1-2 seconds but the wwhole time it idles in R.

Yes it's the whole time it's in reverse.

After thinking about this would it not quick shaking when the slack gets taken up by the trans and you are not moving and got your foot on the brake.

These luxury cars lure you in with the gorgeous interior and ride, thinking you can get a deal on a top end ride by just fixing a trans problem for cheap.

It rarely works out that way unless you can do Transmissione work, internal, yourself, like Mike. Otherwise it's a parts car at a $500 price

Jimmy57 is correct,

The 2006 S60 2.5T with 102K...

Vibration during REVERSE but not during Drive.
Upper Torque Mount is bad, the fore part of the rubber is cracked.
I don't have time for the proper repair, so this ghetto fix, which turns out very good --- > Vibration is gone.

Just get a piece of rubber hose about 2" long.
Size of rubber hose is similar to the index finger, probably trans cooler hose
left-over that I have lying around.
Wet it with some water or WD-40 and pinch it abit so it is obloid in shape, then push it in, leaving a bit
sticking out as a reminder for later.
Move the mount a bit to make space for the hose to go in.
For now, it is a good fix for me, and it is FREE!

During REVERSE, the front tires rotate backward, but the engine rotates forward (basic law of Physics 101)
into the void, thus the vibration.
The rubber hose occupies this void and it is fine now.

In fact,

If you are short of budget, you can remove the existing mount, cut some rubber hose and fill
in the gaps, then reinstall it. The void in the rubber hose acts like a cushion.

Now,

Let's say you check and/or replace the bad mounts (5 total) and still have vibration in REVERSE...
There is an old Newton Physics law of "opposite force"...or Newton's 3rd law of Physics.

So if you have replaced the mounts and still have vibration only during R (reverse) and the car otherwise
drives smoothly in D, I'd say live with it.

I have sketched a diagram so you can see...

- In DRIVE, the axle spins CW, the engine torques backwards or CCW.

- In REVERSE, the axle spins CCW, the engine still torques backwards or CCW, but there is a component
produced with the axle trying to spin CCW (thus geneating opposite engine torquing in CW manner: the small
yellow arrow). This creates a fight between the crankshaft torque and the axle torque, thus the vibration
during REVERSE.

Don't you love Physics?

If you replaced the '5' mounts, did you check the 6th on the bulkhead that the upper toque mount connects too? I've seen those go bad.
