so over a month ago I got check engine light and the emissions message and with a bit of debug work checked the intake VVT solenoid which showed infinite resistance. I order the part online from a Volvo dealer in New Mexico. Unfortunately, they had to order the part and their system was not very efficient so I finally get a parts kit after 3 weeks. I have the 2.4 base model non-turbo and the new part has been through at least 2 part number changes. The box was Volvo OEM with the correct number and included was a gasket, connector, wires and solenoid. The weirness began when I noticed the connector male and female were different size so that I couldn't plug one into the other. Got out the calipers and they differed by a millimeter. So now i'm thinking the supplier used some crappy Chinese connectors. Then I took a close look at the part number on the solenoid. Even though the kit part number, gasket part number and connector part numbers were correct, the part number for the solenoid itself could not be found as US Volvo part number. The google search showed hits for Russian and Scandinavian sites. So time to call the dealership and get them to send another.

Only thing I can think of is Volvo parts center got a parts kit where someone put a European part in the box and that part uses a different electrical connector. Everything else lines up as far as bolt holes and gasket and the Scandanavian site shows the part is for 2001 S80 where mine is a 2001 S60 but in the USA those models use same part. sigh......these Volvo P2's are a never ending test of patience.

Are the solenoids different or just the connectors? There are a few threads on the connectors.

I have harvested connectors from a 1999 for these if you need.

In the kit the solenoid is part number 31372037 AA but the part listed for my 2001 S60 is 31251212. The part numbers have been superseded many times but the part i received is wrong. The kit is part 36002696 which is correct for my car. I suspect Volvo screwed up when assembling kit parts.

update: I wasn't careful enough when i tried to plug in connector first time. With parts on my bench, connector went in with a little force. I'm guessing there was some flashing left on. The weird part is that you will not find the 31372037 part number on US sites. Its on the car and works. Another Volvo oddity.

Often times some parts are removed from its packaging and the odds of it being repackaged incorrectly is high. Kinda like when as a kid you take something from the tool box and later get reprimanded for the wrong doings.
