Hello, I have been looking around for an XC70, and found one I like at auction....(buy all cars at auction cause I cheap).
Nothing at all wrong with it....except for some reason the front airbag is deployed. And it is located in the middle of nowhere. 400 miles to the nearest dealer or Indie. Flatbedding it out would cost more than the car.
Will the car drive at all once the airbag has been deployed? Or will the computer kill the ignition? Or put XC into cripple mode? And if the computer does disable, any quick fixes?
Also, if I do happen to get the beast home, is the airbag/tensioner something any of you think I could fix myself with a Vida scanner and spare parts? Or is a dealer advised?
Thank you all for the knowledge and time.

Will a 2006 XC70 operate with a deployed airbag?

You will have an SRS light on, of course but the car will start and run fine.
Budget $2000-3000 for an auction car to bring it to roadworthy status. Because of parts cost and need for dealer labor to integrate electronics, P2 models are poor flip, candidates

Thank you Abscate,
I read somewhere that 90's Volvos would not move at all once a bag popped, and was afraid the trend had continued. And could find no confirmation elsewhere on the internets either way.
So, good. Shall try to get her from cheap, and hopefully no flippers will bid against me. Then worry about fixing the dumb over-eager airbag once XC has made it home. Thanks again.
Any other good advice?

You will always outbid a flipper if your intent is to get a daily driver as your profit is 5 years of driving, not quick buck, so no worries there.
There is always a risk at auction that there is something else wrong with the car of course - the difference between a wholesaler and a one off buyer is that they will get a right of return that you won't get unless you are at auction every week. They don't have the risk you do.
There is so much bad information on the internet, isnt there?

Once the car detects its in accident, it blocks fuel pump. I think all more or less new cars do this, they have to.
If you bring DiCE+VIDA laptop with you, you'll be able to release the lock of fuel pump.

Ill confess I found so much conflicting information on the web on this that I will defer to someone with primary knowledge here.
Alldata for my 2005 has no reference to fuel cutoff but that doesn't mean the fuel control module can't do this.
Somone with VIDA can clear this up definitively.
Unless you have dealer plates I would plan on flatbedding it back from the auction, in any event.

When the car is in a wreck of sufficient force for airbags the SRS control module sends a network crash occurrence signal. ECM shuts of engine when this is detected. When ignition is switched off and network modules all go into offline mode then the next ignition cycle it will run again UNLESS there is a crash sensor error. Can anyone at the auction yard tell you if the car has been been running. IS it marked for sale as running?
I have had steering wheels off cars with airbag open circuit codes, the same codes that remain when airbags/belts/curtains have deployed, present and the car operates fine but with warning light and messages in cluster. In some rare occasions the crash sensor can be damaged and could send crash occurrence signal continually. Usually an extensive damage accident where SRS module is physically damaged or may have been wet from spilled sodas or rain post-wreck.
Disclaimer: operating any motor vehicle with safety systems not functioning poses risks exceeding the risk level of that vehicle model with fully functional safety systems. Advise use of crash camera when operating a vehicle in compromised situation as the video replayed on YouTube is interesting to watch and may have commercial or litigant value. Also may be of value to defendants. Posting such film footage on public websites may cause ridicule for which there is no legal or civil remedy. Having crashes like this can be fatal or result in increased blood pressure sometimes with nausea and loose stool. Urinary discharge has been reported in some cases. Some of these symptoms occurred at similar rates with placebo crashes in the control group. If you have a crash lasting more than 4 hours contact a physician as this can be harmful.

Thanks Jimmy and also VTL and again Abscate,
No, no the auction does not say it runs. Do not think they ever do if a bag has popped.
So, after an accident, the computer shuts off the fuel pump....but next time the ignition is switched this behavior should cease.....unless something got broke. Got it.
Wish I knew why the airbag went off in the first place, but shall bid. And if it does not start, will go to plan B.
Thanks again for the advice. Much appreciated.

You need to pass on this one. If you don't have money for a flatbed, you dont have the budget for this car. A $3000 bill to get this on the road is very likely. auctions are for people in the business, private deals are for us. Look on Craig's list, local, or makefriends with a forum member in a big city .
There is so much that can be wrong with a non-runner it's Volvo roulette with 5 cylinders
loaded. If the price is that good at some point you lose the car to someone who parts it, too. They will have their own flat bed.
Ask Jim for some of his horror stories, irvread sone of the DIM CEL threads on P2.
The airbag went off because of a collision.
