1999 S70 NA strange noise on start up

Post by scot850 »

I went to look at a possible candidate for a project car yesterday. Car has been owned from new by father and then son for last 5 years. Car looked like it has had any issue fixed when dad owned it at the dealer, and then son has mainly used a Volvo specialist for last 5 years.

I read some of the more recent service records and it highlighted an issue with the ETS (ETM) light on. It has been running like this for the last 25,000 miles or so with no apparent issues. When the car was fired up (it had been outside in -15C before I arrived, but was in a heated garage when this happened) it made a strange 'popping' noise, when it started, then stopped making any noises. Noise appeared to come from the area of the ETM but hood was closed at the time. Any ideas what it could be?

Car has 185,000km (115,000 miles on it).

I probably won't buy it but was curious as I have never heard that noise before.

Car needed at least the brake pads (rotors maybe), had the inner/outer steering links again with advisory that was 25,000 miles old, ETM needing repair and filters/service required. Had PCV service 3 years ago and timing belt 5 years ago. Wasn't able to drive the car as it had no registration.
Also had a groaning/whining from steering.

The kicker for me was the son had clipped the garage door post with the RH rear fender lip bending it badly. No major rust, but there was also a crease in the roof above the 'B' pillar. With the mechanical repairs and body repairs needed it is a good car with some work, but the car would need to be free for me to get close to break even after doing my project using it. They would negotiate, but from a starting point of $2500 CDN.

Oh, well. Just have to keep looking!!!

Thanks,

Neil.
