I locked my only keys in my car!!

Post by MadeInJapan »

How could this happen, you might ask??

Ugh... I was on the phone, stopped to pick up an order for lunch for a group at work...
The radio was on and annoying during the call...I should have just turned it down or off...I had turned the engine off but you all know as long as the key is in the ignition, the radio stays on...so I've gotten in the habit of just pulling it out of the ignition but leaving it in place.

That's exactly what I did...then the phone call ended and I got up, pushed the lock button on the door and exited the car.
Immediately I realized that my key was in the car and I was outside of the car- in the cold and our hot lunch was waiting for us in the restaurant I was parked in front of. So I went in and told them of the situation, and asked them to keep the food hot- I will be back as soon as I can get my car unlocked.
So, I walked around until I found a coat hanger at a clothing store nearby. But when I returned to the car, I realized quickly that this wasn't going to work and if I persisted I would most likely tear up the rubber door surround, so I quit.

Next, I called my insurance company's road side service. It took them about 20 minutes to get to me and within a few minutes they had my door open. They used an inflatable device they wedged in the door to give the guy enough room to put in a coat hanger like device to open the door latch. Problem solved...for then.

So, I got to thinking- my key fob has the small skinny key that if I had separated from the fob, I could have used to open the door. I could keep the two pieces separated or I could buy another slim key. When I bought this car used, the previous owner had lost the second fob so this was the only key I had and the skinny key is what has the opening on it that allows me to attach it to other keys or to something else. Buying a new fob from the dealer is expensive and prohibitive for me at this time...

So, I started a search to buy another slim key. I finally found one at a good price on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/281782503157?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT I also confirmed that Ace Hardware in our town will laser cut that key! Just waiting on the key to arrive now. I'm either going to carry it in my wallet or hide it somewhere on the or under the car for the times that I repeat my actions again, because I know I will.

The blank skinny key came last Wed and I had it laser cut at an ace hardware on Friday for $15. It works perfectly and stays in my wallet for now!

Thanks for letting us know how it ended! Since the physical key can't actually operate the ignition, it would be safe to keep hidden on the outside of the car.

I got a working replacement blade key from http://www.myswedishparts.com/ from the VIN number.

To find a good place to hide it is the issue- Parameters are very tight (not much rubber surround parts) and I don't trust the magnetic boxes to stay on the car. On my S70 I have a metal key (doesn't have the plastic bit so it's slim) hidden in the rubber window surround near the base of it, next to the hood...it's wrapped in a latex glove so it doesn't fall through...
Now everyone knows!
Come steal my S70 and insurance will pay dearly!!! LOL
