How Loose Turbo Induction hose can drive you crazy

Post by abscate »

A retrospective look of how a simple bad clamp can have you hunting all over for problems

Thread dates back to 2013 when I first found MVS! I sure know a lot more about these cars than I did back then.

And how my knowledge made the same problem a few years later a 1 hour diagnostic walk in the park, by comparison.

I blew off the upper intercooler hose TWICE recently after removing the cooling fan & relay shelf to replace the front hydraulic MM. Didn't sufficiently tighten down the hose clamp. I punch it while speeding up an entrance ramp only to hear a loud FFFOP, dash lights going nuts, and unable to control engine speed.

First time for that incident. Didn't know what the hell was going on! And after all of that work....geesh.

Been there many times. Tighten that thing down til you think it's tightened, and then tighten it some more. But not TOO tight :D

Yah, don't do it on an uphill. Learned that leaving the neighborhood after some repairs onto a 45 MPH road. 3000 RPM and WOOOOOSSH! Had to limp it back home at 10 MPH and push it up the driveway when it died slowing for the ramp & wouldn't restart. Volvos are heavy...

Oh man those clamps are rusty! I'm honestly surprised the skid plate doesn't protect and keep those things from rusting out entirely. When I was pulling my motor last month, lower induction clamp was so rusted, I couldn't unscrew the clamp at all. Ended up having to pry and cut the clamp off.

I've got silicone hoses in that location but they don't play well with oil either and some oil leaks into these hoses and make them slick. You really have to de-grease and start over on those when they start popping off...just tightening the T-Clamps on can make them slide off.
