98 S70 Gas cap alternatives (SAAB?)

Hey all, hope everyone is enjoying their Satudays!

Was wondering if I could get some insight here. So I know that we are all pretty set on the need for Volvo branded gas cap for our cars. But at $30 + shipping a pop, I was wondering if there are any decent alternatives. I have had a Motorad in there for a year but when I went to fill up the tank yesterday, I noticed that the rubber washer was all twisted, misaligned and compressed. And being that I'm getting a P0442 more frequently now, I'm hoping that takes care of it until the Spring. For 8 bucks shipped from Amazon last year, I believe we've gotten some use out of it. And I suppose I could just get one a year and not be in the red until year three... But God, that's such a wasteful way to go about stuff.

One alternative that I am thinking is worth a try is the SAAB OE gas cap https://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/5024/Gas-Cap-4727038/:

(And at $11 for an OE piece with OE rubber, I'd much rather go this route than Motorad...)

Can anyone tell me if it'll fit the OE Volvo gas tank?

UPDATE:
Seems like this SAAB gap cap is for Viggen or HOT 9-3s. So I'll run to Autozone and see if the threads line up to the Volvo cap. If it does, I'm ordering it!

I had an aftermarket NIB replacement gas cap for my 89 SAAB 900 NA. When I retired that car this past year, I looked up the part number and was surprised to find that the same gas cap was reported to also fit my 98 V70.

Those threads look exactly the same, right? Thanks for this, kranz!

I'm just trying to save a buck here, but also want an OE quality rubber seal. I think I'm going to go for it. I can't imagine SAAB and Volvo would use such widely varying specs for gas caps, right?

Go to local autoparts place with your gas cap.
Buy a generic gas cap for $5 and transfer the gasket over.
Make sure it is similar size/shape.

For me this is always a junkyard part. Super cheap, super easy to get, always works right, lasts forever. Ask abscate if the has one still from the 99 he is parting out?

I have a gas cap on my V70 that I bought from Autozone over 4 years ago. Not had a problem yet. I paid $10.00.

It is still on there, but I forgot to trip the door open before I removed the electrics - and, even on a junker, I can't bring myself to crowbar open the door on a perfect fender just to get a gas cap. Car was supposed to be hauled this weekend but I know its frozen into the ground so it might still be there. Ill check and advise

You will be surprised ebay has a lot of these used gas cap (Volvo Genuine).
Just make sure you check the photos to be sure the gasket is good before buying it.
Just checked this morning, there is a used gas cap listed for $3 or so, plus shipping another $3 or so.
Sometimes it is cheaper to buy a $6 used gas cap on ebay than wasting time/gas to go to junk yard.

Of course a new gas cap from Volvo ($30) is a good option if you plan to keep the car for a long time. Think about it this way: $30 gas cap gives you and me 10 years + plus of service, or an aftermarket $8 gas cap from amazon that lasts 2 years? The Brits used to say "Penny wise and pound foolish"...

PS: A gas cap is more than the seal, it also has a valve that allows air IN but not OUT.

Yes, of course eBay has a lot of used, Genuine Volvo gas caps. No surprise there because as mentioned, they pretty much last forever.

Presumably a 99 has the usual cable release inside? You have to crawl in the back in the cold though, and pull the interior rear panel off.
