water in enigne, low oil

Post by h20ham »

Hello

Our beloved 1995 850t automatic trans has not lost coolant, but looses/burns lots of oil. 1 liter per 500 miles
It is well below freezing and were on a trip, would not start. Left in garage over night. Ran fine all the way home.
Today will not start
Used 1 liter of oil on the way
All we see is ice on the dip stick, and at the bottom of dip stick
Seems like poor compression, head gasket (i hate to speculate)

Ant thoughts welcomed please

Coolant should not freeze up, did you have coolant in the system?

Sounds like some to junk the car.

The coolant reservoir is full, can't tell if it's circulating.
Yes, low oil (1l per 500mi) and water (frozen) on and below the dipstick :x

Drain the oil out and see if its full of water.

Nothing to lose at this point

I topped up the oil
It's fine
Frozen water on dipstick thou, not coolant. Moisture from the atmosphere. So most likely extra blow-by. 200k miles on engine.
But it won't start.
It was cold on our way home, that's when we had it in the garage overnight, and it was fine for the drive home 10hr, outside of 1l oil.
Haven't pulled the turbo hoses to see how much oil is there.
If there is extra water in the fuel, and it is again frozen, burps on 2-3 cylinders but won't catch. To me that is not frozen lines, maybe injectors, but the car was parked with a blanket and light bulb on all night after the extra day and garage overnight thing.

And sure don't want to put ANY money into a dead engine

What was your mixture of coolant to water? It seems that the mixture was off, if you're getting frozen water on dipstick. Buy the way, which is not at all normal, and most certainly means some sort of gasket failure.

It may be fixable, but, if that water completely freezes in the wrong places of the block, you're looking at a cracked block when that water completely freezes.

Good stuff
Thanks
It chugs, but feels like zero compression on a couple. Spinning too fast
Change spark plugs
Synthetic oil
But why is it going throu so much. It's actuall 3l per 700milse. Had to think about it again, sorry

Where is the oil going? That's a huge amount of use, so it should be visible on the road if it's leaking. If it's being burned in the engine, you've got major engine problems in rings or valve train, or possibly turbo
