Stuck Fuel Door 97 850 Wagon- location of manual release

Post by dyn blin »

My wife took the wagon to pick up some supplies a couple hours away this weekend. While she was about to fill up for the return home, she found the fuel door lock would not disengage, even after multiple locks and unlocks through the dash button. She called me and I talked her through the manual release, and she was able to fill and make it home. As she rolled it into the driveway, she locked it out of habit. I know Robert has a few videos of the manual releases for various 850's, but I've haven't seen a wagon documented, so I used the opportunity to snap a few pics and share them here...

Access to the manual release is on the same side as the fuel door- behind the right rear quarter panel:

For access, removal of the front floor panel, folding-up of the cargo jump seat back, and removal of right-side floor panel will get you to the point you can pull the corner access panel. The right side floor panel is held by 2 friction clips- pulling up where my hand is positioned in the 3rd photo will release both:

Then remove the corner access panel below the speaker panel- turn the black knob to rotate a tab to release:

You'll see the wire loop for the manual release of the locking pin for the fuel door- give it a gentle pull :

Until I can trouble shoot the cause, I reached back behind the panel (following the black wire-wrap above the wire release loop) and unplugged the socket from the lock motor. It was also a good opportunity to clear out the rail drain (you can see it cut off at the bottom of the last photo) & plug below it.
