Post by sergitin32 »

Ok we just purchased a new volvo, so we a two volvo family now, i got the old to work out and my wife the newy...

So this is a 1992, 940 TURBO...
I haven't bee diggin in the VIN number yet to know what kinda engine or anything, just wondering what kinda advices i can colect from previous owners for this model...

My old 240 is been waiting for some more fixing but i cant do it since i am commited to my work and the free time i wont go doing more mechanic, as my work is just doing mechanics all day long...

I have the whole luxury package for this new car... meaning the something like the touring grand delux?? lets say, air contditioner heated leather seats, power everything, sunroof, central locking... automatic transmition with 4th gear , would be the same as overdrive for older models?

four disk brakes with ABS, hmmmmmm dunno what else to mention...
any advice would be welcome... hopefully wont be much of probs to post here!!! got the car yesterday and we are driving happly around... its a good looking vehicle and perform prety well.

for my old 240 dl 1982, canadian engine, single carburator, i just haven't been sure where all that noice comes from... so i will make a new post for this car, ok?
have a nice day. cheers you all.

Two Volvos!!

The main thing to check, as soon as possible, is that the timing belt has been changed at the correct mileage - 50,000 miles (80,000 kms).

The auto transmission fluid should be changed every 20,000 miles (33,000 kms).

Other things to look at are the Positive Crankcase Ventilation, auxiliary drive belts and fuel filter at 60,000 miles (96,000 kms).

I just sent your post to the friend who sold me the car and would like you to read his answer and as ussual get me out of the doubt.

The postive crankcase ventilation he talks of is a common problem in NON TURBO Volvos, its called the "flame trap" and it blocks up, causing oil leaks. The turbo models don't have this.

this is my only question, if my car is turbo, i dont have to worry about any positive crankcase ventilation??? i dont really know whats is all this...

Drive belts have been done at 201,000kms and are in good condition. They might need tightening every 20000kms. The brand in your car is Continental, which are the best belts for European cars. I used to use them at the last workshop I worked in Australia.

The fuel filter I left with you can be changed next oil change. Mark it with a marker with date and kms on it so you know when to do it next. 60,000kms is a good interval for the fuel filter.

One thing I think needs doing soon is the brake fluid. It should be replaced every two years. As brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture) it can cause the system to perform less well after a time, and cause caliper and cylinder problems, ie seizing or leaking. IF the car is driven regularly then no problems usually occur until way after the due date of the fluid.

this is the rest, seams the car has had a fine manteinance , or at least the parts i should look out are bearly new... so its all good!!!
thanx lots and have a great time bill

It certainly seems as if you have a well maintained car in this one.

Your friend is correct that there is no flame trap on the turbo but all modern cars have a Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. The PCV has rubber piping in its make-up and this has to be checked regularly to ensure it has not split or collapsed due to age. If this does happen it will make a difference to the running of the engine. There is no need to dismantle anything to check the pipes. A visual check or a gentle squeeze will suffice.

On your car the pipes to check are 5, 7 & 10 on the attached picture:

positive crankcase ventilation??? i dont really know whats is all this...
In the 'good old days', when I first started driving, the crankcase was vented by a pipe which allowed all of the crankcase gases into the atmosphere. A common sight on the roads was a cloud of oil smoke with a car in front of it. Regulations now forbid that and the harmful crankcase gases are drawn back into the engine and burnt off.
