Re: Rod through the block - Engine swap guidance 2000XC
If it were a 2000 build engine on the C70 it should be a B5244T with solid bucket tappets though C70s were often a year behind with some inclusions. Your own 2000 V70 XC should also have that engine designation if it's a 2000 year build. The 2001 XC70 may be a better match but it won't matter if it's a B5254T as the only difference is the tappet type and some oil spray on pistons for cooling.

I'd think so. If both are turbo they should match. At least the 850ies had just one type of automatic tranny, and i think that is true for the s/v/c 70 till 2000 (P80).So the front wheel drive C70 transmission is a swap for the AWD XC? Just bolt on the XC angle gear and it's done?

You are correct. I was wrong when I said we got a B5254T. Actually both engines are B5244T. I just double checked the stamped codes. Sorry for the mix up.precopster wrote:If it were a 2000 build engine on the C70 it should be a B5244T.........
Yes, both cars are turbos with the same B5244T engine. The front drive C70 trans looks like it has the mounting boss and bolt holes where an angle gear would attach for AWD applications.Clemens wrote:I'd think so. If both are turbo they should match. I've gotten the name plate data from both transmissions. Both have the same model number 50-42LE but a small variation in the other number. I don't know the significance of the 1208 919 vs 1208 942. Maybe a different final ratio? Time for more research. Pic below.

I think those might be date codes and production line codes but the experts here will confirm

I've not had the transmission side by side but I can't imagine that the XC transmission will swap out directly for a FWD. There is a splined collar that goes between the transmission and the transfer case that drives the gearcase for the rear wheels and the seal arrangement is totally different since it is a double seal arrangement on the AWD transmission to seal both the drive collar and the axle. The right hand axle is driven directly by the transmission like a FWD and the axle goes through the collar. The axle and the collar are sealed separately.
There are also mounting holes machined into the side of the transmission where the transfer case bolts up that I don't think are there on the FWD version.

My 2000 build T5 (P2 FWD 5 speed series) has the angle gear holes. Perhaps it's a 2000 build thing at the Aisin factory to cut down on production costs so all casings can go one way or the other.
The rear of the case needs to come off so the angle gear collar can be fitted from the inside as Ozark mentioned . It's been done successfully here on MVS on a P2 T5 (the guy converted an AWD casing to FWD) however the final drive ratio would need to be matching.

Thanks for all the trans info. Obviously not the simple swap I had assumed. We will stick with the original AWD trans for now and try to figure out why it was losing fluid. It may have just been leaking from around the dipstick base but I did not get to personally investigate that before the engine went out. Any usual suspects for trans leaks? I can order seals along with everything else I'm putting in.

Most transmission leaks are at the axle seals but the torque converter input shaft seals can leak as well. While the engine and the transmission are out of the car it is real easy to change the seals.
