Rough start then no starting on a steep hill?? 2000 V70

Post by instarx »

Strange issue this weekend. Was at relatives for Christmas and parked the car in their steep driveway overnight. The car must have been at least at 35 degrees slope, nose up. In the morning it started but ran very roughly. I thought it was the transmission and it did get better when I put it in reverse, but when I put it in Drive the roughness started again and had no power. Turned it off and restarted it - it ran roughly in Park and died and would not restart (Oh great... trapped at my relatives). I let it coast down to level ground and it still would not start. Fifteen minutes later it started fine. I then drove it 150 miles home with no issues. (that was the trip from hell, but that's another story. It took 7 hours to drive what is normally a 3 hour drive).

Some details:
- there was some oil on the asphalt under the engine. This is unusual since the car does not leak oil.
- fuel tank was 3/4 full
- oil level was 3/4 quart low, but within the acceptable range.

Any ideas? I'm thinking maybe the hill was so steep the oil pump was starved? But why would that make it not start after it was level again? And where the heck would that oil on the driveway have come from?

Any codes? When a car doesn't start, you have to troubleshoot why it failed to start, what was missing out of the 5 things that a car needs to run.

Are codes stored in a history? Because otherwise no. I don't carry a code reader with me.

What happened to my tanker-puppies avatar picture by the way?

Probably, as long as the battery hasn't been disconnected.
