"...ALL XCs have the same engines: 01-02, 2.4Ts... 03-07, 2.5Ts..."
Add to that the 6 cylinder 3.2 that appeared around 2008????
It's the subtle improvements that were incorporated in the later 5 cylinder cars that I would be interested in, like the more robust Bosch throttle body that doesn't need to be reprogrammed if it ever DOES need to be replaced (rare) and the more reliable (supposedly) Haldex drive unit, both of which appeared somewhere around the 2003-2004 timeframe.
Where do I go from here, 2001 v70xc?

The 2.5Ts beginning 2003 have dual CVVT and they yield an extra 6KW in peak power. They also seem to have a more flattened torque curve and better response at lower revs.
In 2006 Volvo released updated firmware for the 2001 ETM which addressed the habit of the throttle to cause limp mode.
Later cars (post 2002 if I'm correct) also incorporated an electric brake vacuum pump switched by vacuum pressure which assisted the brakes during hard or prolonged use..
From 2002 on they had the Bosch throttle and a totally different sensor setup for cam and crànk and also a new connector method for other sensors. Also in 2002 they changed to an integral thermostat/ECT design with only 2 locating bolts and a ribbed thermostat seal for the head.
Under the hood after 2003 there are detail changes such as a reduction in many of the locating bolt head sizes. Continual Canbus upgrades saw better transmission and engine control but I'm not aware of when the upgrades were implemented.
A visit to the dealer can give you a free Canbus upgrade incorporating these upgrades under Volvo's "free software for life" policy however you need to have other work done in order to qualify.
Interior changes provide darker plastics for instruments and controls as well as some chrome highlighted areas aroumd the dials. Rear seating became available with a 40/20/40 option and in general color schemes were more in keeping with the times.
In 2003 headlights went from glass to plastic which for many is a step backward as the plastic lenses oxidize requiring polishing. Also headlights had a Bi Zenon ootion though I"m not certain what year that began.
On the XC90s new talights appeared in 2007 and there are other cosmetic changes on the front as years progressed as they ran with the same shape until and during 2015.
In 2003 Volvo seemed to have an improved valve body design for the automatic cars though failure still occurs when treated badly so driving style of previous owners still needed to be gentle and regular fluid changes a must.
I may have missed a thing or two so if anybody else wants to chime in

chrome highlighted areas around the dials.
2004
Rear seating became available with a 40/20/40 option and in general color schemes were more in keeping with the times.
You could get that from day one of the P2s, early 2000

2005 not 2003

not really decent until the 2005 models
