1996 850R Noise from front Left at 15mph

Hi,

So I noticed that when the car is first started after being in park, as soon as I reach around 15mph I hear a strange noise coming from the front left of the car, then I never hear it again for the remainder of the trip. I am not sure what this can be but seems that this is triggered by something initially once that speed is hit. Has anyone had any experience with this noise?

Please describe the noise a bit. Is it a clicking? Grinding? Thumping? A howl?

Does the car wobble or shimmy when this noise happens?

It is like a binding sound....almost like a quick urrrrrrrrt

It's your ABS self test, and kudus to your observational skills!

At 15 mph, the pump turns on and checks for pressure in the lines

Thanks for bringing this up. It is barely 2017 and you already solved a problem that has kept me wondwring for years. I have to mention though that i can only hear this on our 95 854, never on my 96 R.

Funny you should mention, you are absolutely right...I put it under the wrong heading but I have both cars and it only makes the noise on my 1995!! Wonder why this is the case. Did something change in 1996?

It does it on all the ABS cars but it can be subtle and easily missed. My 2005 makes a lower frequency and shorter ...whuttttt.....sound as opposed to the 1999 uuurrrrrttttttt.

they changed the ABS module from 95 to 96, maybe it is less loud or the noise intensity of the urrrrt varies with wear or something else...

My 96R wagon makes the "urrrrrrhhhhttt" sound.
