How fit this exhaust clamp

Post by qwertyjjj »

The rearmost clamp for my exhaust has corroded and fallen off. The only reasonable replacement I can find is this but it has no part to attach to the hangar bracket.
Can I drill into somewhere to attach it?

I don't think so. Plus problem with the rear hook besides rust is that the tail pipe after the muffler may crack and fall, can't support the whole muffler weight.
But there's good - if ghetto - news. I used a small chain from the hardware store, passed on a frame hole (remove rubber caps) above the muffler, then under the muffler.

It's hanging with a metal coat hanger at the moment :)
Though that's not doing much than it isn't already supporting itself from the hanger further forward.

By "passed on a frame hole" do you mean you made a new hole in the underside frame?
Could I somehow get a steel hook and add it into this bracket and connect to the rubber hanger?

I'll try take a picture tomorrow. That rear muffler bracket was poorly designed by V, happily as you found along many others, the whole muffler can stand by only the hanger after the front silencer. Mm something smells like Ford's hand here.

Can I see the front hanger to see how corroded it is?
How far up is it?

Here,s how my chain is attached. It seems solid, it passes above by two frame rail holes - normally covered with a rubber cap. The muffler must be lowered to see these holes. Note that I don't have the muffler heat shield any more, which might be in the way.
Also the center hanger just before the elbow. Sells of Ebay but found mine on a scrap yard - quite easy to find one.
Notice how the tail pipe is completely broken where it enters the muffler. I'm about to weld it back in place but won't use it again to hang the muffler.

It comes with a hanger. I installed two of them (on two cars).
