Hope it's not something really serious like a 'hair line' crack to the short block.
One wonders what the specific diagnosis/reason was from the dealers that caused them to do the head gasket presale.
Would you have had any recourse from them had you returned the vehicle straight away?
Having worked on her yourself and changed the turbo that option is sadly gone.

Unfortunately, after test driving it, I signed an "as is" disclaimer. I'm hoping not a cracked block too! The dealership would not do anything more for me on it before I touched it. I called the shop who did the head gasket that said that it was towed in with a blown head gasket and that the radiator was replaced just before they got it.
I'm waiting on o rings to reseal the turbo drain line and am going to try to run it longer to try to burn out any residual stuff that might be in the exhaust system and go from there.
If I do get it going, I'm definitely installing a mechanical oil pressure gauge, water temp and a boost gauge to keep an eye on things.

I've got an ultra gauge fitted in my V40 which gives actual coolant temp' and boost (along with numerous other readings) but it will not give oil pressure or oil temp' unfortunately.
Subject to Volvo model / years of some of the early compatible obd11 data the ultra gauges data capabilities are limited. Later model cars will provide a greater range of data.
Scan gauges are a popular alternative with similar or maybe better capabilities.
I had wondered if your purchase was on an as-is basis.

Those ultra gauges look like a neat product.
My turbo seals came in yesterday. When it warms up here tomorrow, I'll install and run the motor for a longer duration and get back to you all on the results. Thanks for the great input.

It turned out that when I installed the replacement turbo, I failed to seat the oil drain tube in properly. The o-ring was mangled also, probably restricting flow. At the time, I didn't realize that the torx bolts at the connection on the turbo itself were accessible with a 1/4 " bit-swivel-extension.
The way to do it is get the tube seated into the block first, then get the gasket ready and install at the turbo connection. I also recommend a genuine Volvo O-ring(a lot of you on the forum are probably thinking, "Yeah, no kidding!") as it seems to be a tougher composition and has rounded and not square edges in comparison to other manufacturers.
So to finish up, any smoke from the original turbo failure has burned out, there are no leaks, and all is well.

It's nice to see someone diagnose a problem without just throwing parts at it. I subscribe to method but will admit that I have begrudgingly hail mary-ed a few times.
Good news. Enjoy your V40.
