2000 Volvo V40 1.9T
U.S.
The bulbs in the dash for my climate controls are burnt out and I can't find the part number. I contacted my local Volvo dealer who suggested that my mechanic pull the bulbs and bring them in and the bulbs could be ordered and shipped overnight. Aside from the expense and the loss of my car for a few days that just doesn't seem like an efficient solution. But, I am having no luck identifying the size/wattage of the bulbs let alone a Volvo or Sylvania part number. I also have a light out on the dash behind the gas gauge - again, no luck identifying the part. Any ideas or means of checking without going through the Volvo dealer's suggestion?
Also, I have no lights to the left of the steering wheel (light switch, dimmer) nor in the center consle window & mirro controls. Is this normal or do I have lights out here too?
I've never had a Volvo before so I'm not sure what's normal....

Typical dealer reply. It isn't a hard job to look up part numbers but if you can get the customer to do it for you then you can have an easy day.
The attached shows the bulbs behind the climate control part #30618412 and you need 4 if you have no light there at all. They are expensive as they come complete with the holder.
The instrument cluster has different sized bulbs in it. I think the one behind the fuel gauge is part #30864008 and is rated at 2 watts. The other bulbs in the cluster are #30864007, 3 watts; 30822412, 3 watts; #30822410 & #30827958 are both rated at 1.4 watts.
The light switch takes bulb #30864099 but I can't find a wattage listed for that. I'm not sure what you mean by the centre console window. The mirror controls should be lit up as should the other switches in the door.
You don't need a mechanic to change the bulbs as they are easily replaced. Search for the various units on this forum and you will probably find they have been covered before. Even the climate control unit is easy.
My advice is to steer clear of the dealer for the bulbs. Use one of our sponsors at the top of the forum. I have run most of the part numbers through MyVolvoPartsOnline's search feature and found prices way below the dealer. I haven't checked the other sponsors but they all undercut the dealer. My advice would be to call one of the sponsors, who are all knowledgeable about Volvo parts, and ask for their help in getting the right bulbs at the right price.

Bill,
Many thanks. I can't tell you how much time I've spent trying to get that info. I will proceed to one of the sponsors to purchase the bulbs.
The console lights I was referring to are for the controls between the front two seats from the parking brake to the ashtray. I have the small lights in the S and W transmission options but the window controls, mirror controls, and and back window controls are dark. Is there back lighting for these? Also, the driver door controls, light switch, and dimmer to the left of the steering wheel are dark. Are there lights behind these as well?
I've never owned a Volvo before - I can't recall even seeing a V40 until I purchased this one off eBay in Chicago. I've had the thing for almost a year and it just hit me on a long road trip that Volvo could not have designed the interior to be so dark! Duh! Is there any kind of promo pics or brochures online that show a lighted interior so that I can see what I'm missing?
Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, it's an awesome , appreciated gift!

All of the switches should be illuminated either by their own bulbs or by a 'light pathway'. This is a system of providing illumination to more than one switch using only one bulb. The attached shows the switches in the V40. You will see that some of them have a bulb specified. #11 is the light switch.
As I said in my previous post if you talk to one of the sponsors' staff they will help you to get it right.

Got help from https://www.myvolvopartsonline.com/
I found bulbs on the site then had them confirmed over the phone with some excellent, patient assistance. My 2000 Volvo V40 requires the following OEM Volvo parts:
For the Dash Instrument Panel directly behind the steering wheel:
3 Watt - 30864007 Requires 4
2 Watt - 30864008 Requires 3
For the Climate Control backlighting:
30612503 Requires 3
Please note that I have Automatic Climate Controls. If you do not, a different number may be required.
Thanks again for assistance. I'll think of you when I bask in the glow of functioning, bright, dashboard lights!

Thank you for the update. I'm glad everything went well with our sponsor. All the reports I have read about them point to a friendly, helpful team.
As you aren't used to "functioning, bright, dashboard lights!" you should start with the dimmer switch really low and gradually increase the brightness over a period of, oh, say two years, otherwise you may damage your eyes.
Bill.

I realize this thread is stale but here is a quick how-to for the light switch and climate backlighting. I found it very useful. Has part numbers and images.
