[97 850 T5] charcoal canister hoses?

Post by torslanda »

Hi All,

I'm trying to chase down some leak (or leaks) that's causing a P0440 trouble code on my fairly new-to-me 97 855 T5. I already put in a new OE gas cap and replaced a torn hose on the rollover valve but it persists...

My car has the round charcoal canister (PN 9135101) that's behind the driver's front fender. There are two hoses connected to my charcoal canister but, as shown in the photo I've attached, the third outlet on the canister isn't connected to anything. Is this normal? (If it helps: this is a no EGR, no SAS car.)

There should be a third hose there.

Hose #1 connects under the car to to the tank
Hose #2 connects to the purge valve, which I believe on your car is on the fan shroud
Hose #3 runs to the canister shutoff valve ... which basically allows fresh air into the canister under certain conditions.

I can't tell you which hose is missing as my car has the rectangular canister.

You'll have to remove the entire fender liner to get a good look at that third hose.

Many thanks to 101 for the reply. I really appreciate it because this older post (link pasted below) says it's normal for the fitting to be connected to nothing, which just seems odd to me. I'll have to look for a diagram related to this canister to see if I can figure things out. Suggestions most welcome!

My son's old 850 (bless it's sole) had that canister come off in an accident and break. I super-glued it back together and fit the hoses on it the best I could but never did know if I had it right. I'm not sure if it even had that 3rd nipple. Anyway, that's been years ago- after this the car drove fine and never set a code for this thing so I never worried about it again. If you can't find anything, MY suggestion is to put hoses on each of the nipples- leaving one open and erase the code and see if it comes back...maybe you can figure things out by process of elimination.
