SO, on my project 2000 V70 base, I am very slowly working on the bodywork defects while waiting for the mechanical parts to arrive.
I noticed that the front left and rear right roof rail mounting screw covers were missing and the rear rail in particular is not seated fully onto the roof.
The screw for the right rear mount was loose, so thought, easy, tighten it up. But I found no matter how hard I tighten it, it does not pull the mount down and you can still see movement between the head of the Torx screw/bolt and the mount. Am I missing something (other than my marbles!) on how these tighten down?
I have never remove roof rails so not sure how they mount to the roof. I know the car had rails when the previous owner bought it (I have a couple of pictures) but I wonder if they may have been fitted by a previous owner incorrectly?
2nd question - The rubber seal along the top edge of the trunk hatch has partially come away from the double sided tape that mounts it. Otherwise it is in good condition. But at $100+ US for a new one I am baulking at spending money when a good double sided tape would work I'm sure. Can anyone recommend a good auto-motive or other use double sided tape that is very thin and maybe 1/4" to 3/8" wide?
Thanks,
Neil.

3m makes a pile of tape just for this Napa should have it- As to the roofrack all I can can say is put some dumdum or other sealant in the screw holes in the roof or your car will start to smelll when the water makes it in-

Hi Robert,
Watched your video and it is great!
The piece I don't quite get is what do the T25 hold down screws thread into? Is there a captured nut or a hole in the roof they go into? I can't seem to get one of the screws to tighten down for some reason all the way.
I plan to go to PnP this weekend and hope one of the 2 V70XC's is still there with rails still attached so I can pull then to see how they work.
Thanks,
Neil.

There is a captive nut in the roof under the trim strip. I think you can see the bottom of it if you open the rear doors and look up into the jamb..or maybe that's a holder for a different configuration.
The are pretty long on the rail..I'll take a pic to make sure you have the stock ones

There is a captive nylon nut in the roof that holds the screw- the screws are long and I think only used for the roof- there is a little clip thing that holds the plastic trim in place or you can silicone them in if you didn't pay attention and threw away the little clips

Thanks. I have looked at the Vida parts drawing and see all the parts, but it does not show what the bolt goes into. I how to have a look at a V70XC which had rails on it when it went into PnP recently and dis-assemble to figure this out rather than break my own car!
Still can't understand why the bolt stays loose when I try to tighten it down although the bolt appears to be very tight. The RR mounting sits off the roof by about 2-3mm. I am wondering if the PO may have overloaded the rails and bent the mount or the roof preventing it pulling level.
Appreciate the input.
Neil.

i wonder if the bolt at some point completely stripped out the mount? if so, perhaps try getting a screw that is slightly larger than the one currently there, and trying to secure it that way.
when i installed my roof rail (my v70 didn't come with one from the factory), i used silicone sealant to seal the screws. i put a bunch on and around the screw hole, and also coated the tip of the screw with sealant. haven't had issues.

I'll look at one at PnP this weekend and see how it works and then tackle my own with the extra knowledge. I think you may have a point with the damage to the bolt. I have a feeling the roof rails may have been hit on a low garage with a top box on.
I'll update when I get a fix in place.
Thanks,
Neil.
