XC headlight wipers

Post by BlackBart »

Noob question -
Are the headlight wipers on the P2 XC a problem area? My new '04 has them. The rubber blades are shot and there's a small scratch on one glass.

When I was shopping for 850s, I read many times: Don't get the winter package, don't get one with the wipers, they break constantly.

Are these better than the 850 design?

So...I guess they're not a big problem if no reaction..? It looks to me they're likely to freeze into the pocket they sit in, so you need to make sure that's cleaned out before you hit the wash lever.

I have removed the arms, disconnected both motors, disconnected the rubber fluid hose. They work every time the windshield fluid is activated.

Main thing it's these are useless unless you drive long distances in heavy snow conditions.

And yes, drivers side motor always breaks and it's difficult to access.

However, the winter package has front heated seats 8)

Long distances in slop and spray from trucks. Snow usually melts off the lenses when they're on. Seem handy if they work. Remember the euro 4-headlight BMWs (E28? E30?) came with a complicated wiper system for round lights?

Oh, sometimes germans overthink... actually quite often :)

If you need them, there are DIY motor removal and repair out there. I think it's doable without replacing parts, but takes some patience. I don't think these motors break that often, my right one was still working properly after 13 years. As for the blades, not sure where to source them, surely Volvo or a scrap yard?

Mine still work great after 17 years.

My P2 has the spray only type like the rest of my fleet

The wiper arms on the headlights will hold the "narrow" refills - I have purchased a single narrow refill and cut it to length and fit it into the arm on the headlight. The tightness of the fittings holds it in place even with the trimmed end being open.

My 04 V70AWD still work great! All New England winters, too.
