Your intake manifold isn't holding your back, considering one of the hole of the stock intercooler is 2 inch.
Upgrade to do88 intercooler first.

I put the n/a intake on my 98 S70 T5 M and initially, I saw an increase in torque, but after about 2 days it settled back down and was really no improvement at all. I must say though, since installing the n/a intake my highway easily exceeds 32MPG with the cruise set at 70. I also have an upgraded intercooler. Again, didn't really feel a difference, but my objective there was to reduce intake temps and thus improve the longevity of the engine. If my logic is flawed I would like to know. Lastly, if you go with an aftermarket intercooler, be careful when you park. The intercooler sits about 2 inches below the radiator and if you hit the parking block you will rip your radiator apart. Don't ask me how I know!!!!!

Whenever installing an larger intake, you should also make sure you have a good flowing exhaust.

Why would it settle down? Is this motronic 4.3 getting used to the new part trying to cut back on power?

I don't know the science behind the "settling down", but initially I did see quite a difference in torque. To get that back you would have to disconnect the battery every couple of days which would be a pain. Perhaps the ecu "learns" the new airflow and adjusts itself. Sorry, can't answer that one, but I know I'm not the only one to experience this.
FWIK and researched, this is the only way to regain the baseline parameters and temporarily erase the adaptively learned parameters.shaker_chi wrote:I don't know the science behind the "settling down", but initially I did see quite a difference in torque. Just an update. NA intake and throttle body swap has a good 500 miles on it, just got ipd rip kit and adapters. Also added white injectors. This has given it so much more punch (torque) at 2500-3000rpm. Traction becomes an issue on launch...No driveability issues or cel. I ported and polished the intake to match the gaskets and ipd phenolic spacer. This isolates the intake from the head for cooler temps. Getting things together now to connect an OBX downpipe from ebay for 150$ . Vehicle has to pass emissions and inspection.

I had no problem passing emissions with my N/A intake. What injectors originally came with your 850R? I thought the whites were stock. Did you get a tune from ARD or IPD yet? Have you noticed an improvement in gas mileage?
