Low signal to temp gauge

So the check engine light is on in my '04 V70 2.4. The computer is telling me that the temp gauge is getting a low signal. Sometimes the needle takes forever to get to the normal mid line and other times it never makes it. Can I be confident that I just need to replace the temp sensor or are there other common problems?

search the P80 (the one above) forum for

'engine coolant temperature resistance chart'

and you will find the thread to test the sensor.

I would put your odds at a bad sensor at 90%

Thanks! So, basically if it's significantly off from those readings the sensor is bad.

@abscate I'm getting 2160 @19.6°C. I'm thinking that's far enough off to call it bad. What do you think? I'll check again in the morning when it should be ~0°C.

The engine was 0.9°C this morning and it was reading 5160. So the part is ordered. Should be able to put it in next weekend.
