'98 S70 T5 Bad Alternator. Voltage Regulator?
(Voltage Regulator) I watched this video after having a bad alternator confirmed by a test done at O'reillys. My only concern is that my alternator SMELLS bad and also makes a noise when I start the car up cold for about 10 seconds. Could it still be the regulator or will I have to shell out for the big money big project for a whole new alternator?

If it smells bad and makes noise you need a complete rebuild, not just a voltage regulator. Look for a local place that does rebuilds-- the parts store rebuilds are hit or miss...

So on my 04 c70 rebuild on the car is possible, but not fun, I did this since removing alternator is a not so fun task, mine was running low voltage 13.3 or lower so I put it off for a while. Here is what I did on car
The attched video allowed me to see what screws are needed to be removed.
A right angle screw driver will help with access.
I had to lossen the cooling fan and remove some inter-cooler hoses and lower rock guard.
I was able to not drain antifreeze or pull serpentine belt.
Sorry I did not make a video.
The regulator cost me $31 last year, price has come down, so I have original alternator, not a chinese autozone alternator for $31
here is same ebay seller and current listing for regulator with new brushes.

The only shorcut I too was I left off the plastic cover off of the rear, its screw was the hardest of all of them.

If it's just the voltage regulator, it wouldn't smell bad. The bearings are probably shot... time for a new alternator.
