If the crank is on, the cams can be rotated 360 degrees. I have a few videos that may help you. Again, are the spark plugs in? As another asked, are you sure the exhaust cam was not 180 degrees off?

im doing the same exact things hes doing in the video except i didnt remove the vvt hub! when i try to turn the engine, i get about 1/4 turn on the crankshaft and thats where it locks. no spark plugs aint in and no it aint 360 degrees out. let me ask you this: i had to put a new head gasket on is the reason for all this. i had the head re surfaced a little bit. the car had been sitting awhile with antifreeze in the cylinders and head. could i have a valve stuck open on # 5 cylinder? remember i said when i was installing the cam cover the rear of the exhaust cam didnt want to go down and i had a hard time getting it to go down to where the cam cover back there on the rear of the exhaust cam would go down im wondering if a valve could be stuck open because thats the piston thats up when my crank stops turning, #5rspi wrote:If the crank is on, the cams can be rotated 360 degrees. thanks everyone for your input. the valves in cylinder #5 are stuck open! thus causing the piston to hit the valves when rotating the engine a quarter of turn.

Man, it is NOT possible for valves to stick upon. Were the valves open when you had the head off?
Bottom line is, when the crank is set on time, you can rotate the cams around 360 degrees. If you can't do that, something is wrong. Also, if you did NOT pull the cam sprockets, and the crank is set on the mark, then you installed the belt making sure all 3 marks are correct.
Adjust the tensioner and rotor the crank over to insure everything is correct, easy roll over, no contact with valves. If that doesn't work for you, you probably need to tow the car somewhere to have it finished.

yesssssss the valve was stuck open!!!!!!!! the valve tappet or lifter or whatever you want to call it that the camshaft lobe hits to open the valve was stuck in open position and i liked to of never got that sucker back up out of there! i took a hammer and piece of wood and started hitting it over and over and it finally came unstuck and popped back up. i took it out and took some real fine emery cloth and cleaned it up and smoothed it up good now it works fine! so dont tell me that its impossible for a valve to stick open . i may be from tennessee but im not totally stupid!!!
