just read somewhere to pull off a vacuum line and let it draw up some tranny fluid which will in turn smoke from the exhaust leak may have to try that.

Has the cabin air filter been changed recently/ever to your knowledge? That goes along with checking the rubber weatherstrip.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

If your PCV hose on top of the valve cover popped off, you'll smell exhaust gas.

I noticed the last time i changed the cab filter the housing looked a bit warped.

Yep. Mine too. A reminder to pull it all out and find some way to reseal it. Small wonder the "fresh air" coming into the vents is far warmer than the ambient temp would indicate.

warped,screws missing not even flush over the filter hopefully i have corrected all that.
