2000 volvo s70 wont start (no crank)

Post by S70lady »

I was able to start it up and drive to work, and then to the office. I turned my car off for 5 minutes, got back in and it wouldn't turn over. lights would turn on, the radio and air. But the car would not turn over. A jump didn't help, had the car towed to my brothers. He took the starter out, and we got it checked out and it was dead. We thought yay, easy fix. Put the new starter in, and still nothing. Battery, starter, alternator, and engine are all good. But my car still will not start. Before this happened, my car was having some trouble turning over, but always would, and we just chopped it down to the very cold weather we were having. Has this happened to anyone else? What was your fix? This is my only car and I need it desperately.

Man, I can't believe you went to the starter before checking out the fuel pressure...

Have you checked the schrader valve on the end of the fuel rail to see if you have fuel pressure? Fuel pumps and fuel pump relays go out on these cars, usually without any notice. I had it happen to our S70 without any prior warning.

Easiest way to check is to have someone put their ear by the gas tank as you turn the ignition to the on position to see if it hums.

Here's some useful info.

If by "not turning over" he really means it doesn't crank at all i.e. nothing happens when you turn the key, then in my mind there would be so reason to suspect a fuel issue.

Any codes?

Could be something like the crankshaft position sensor preventing it from cranking.

Bad CPS can only prevent the car from starting NOT from cranking.
Check battery cable connections especially grounds and a thin little wire which goes to starter.

Failing the cable connections being the cause you might have a PNP switch issue.
Try the shift lock button and then paddle the shifter several times up and down thru each position.
Then put back in P or N and see if it turns over and starts.

Hello oregonlady

Your 2000 has a wire to jump the ignition switch , which I'm guessing is your problem as to the no-crank condition. If the key switch isn't signaling the starter to crank. I'll find the picture and link to it
