98 v70 axle nut stuck Topic is solved

Replacing my right side axle today and I can't get the axle nut loose. Everything else popped loose with no problem. I've bathed it in penetrant and so far I've broken a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and a 1/2 inch breaker bar at the 1/2 inch insert into the socket. I'm using a 4 ft pipe as a cheater. I've removed the left side nut before with no problems. The right side won't budge. The right side axle was replaced at a shop about 6 years ago so it was probably installed with an impact wrench.

Any tips or ideas? If an electric impact wrench would do the trick please give some suggested tools. Home depot is my closest store. Harbor freight is a long trip and I've not had good luck with their corded tools. I'm stuck at home until my wife gets back at about 6, so for today I'm just going to let the penetrant soak some more. Tomorrow I'll try again.

I had this problem about 5 years ago and took it to a tire shop and they did it for $5 or $10. Loosened, then tightened. Then I went home and it came off easily.

Yes that would work but I've got everything else loose. I'd rather not button everything back up to drive it to a tire shop.

I should have done the axle nut first but I forgot about it and had to go back and try to get it last. I don't mind buying an electric impact wrench if it would help because it will be useful for other things. If an electric wont have the necessary torque someone please tell me so I don't waste my time and money. My air compressor isn't big enough to power an air tool impact wrench.

Is this the 36mm one? I doubt the electric will help on that puppy. I got Fiverivers off one summer with big fat guy on end of cheater pipe. Get a propane torch and heat that sucker up to red.

I have a Harbor Freight, corded electric impact and it has never once failed on the 36 mm axle nuts. Not once! It's about the only thing I use it for anymore. I highly recommend it. It is a bulky one, not one of those little mini impacts, cost me probably $50 about 6 years ago.

Whatever cheap impact you can find with those specs, or a more expensive one with better specs, it will do the trick. Especially given the salt-free roads where you live. Remember if the fastener gets stubborn it often helps to try tightening it. I know you don;t like HF and I can understand why, but you may pay a lot more for the same item at HD. I'd check Craigslist, too.

Who doesn't need more tools! I also use an electric impact driver. I bought it up here from Canadian Tire (more expensive but on sale was about $75 US) and again it has removed every nut without a problem. The bigger problem was getting the axle splines out. I had to us the larges 3 legged puller I had and crank on the puller nut until it eventually came off. Plenty of penetrating oil (not WD40) crank on the tensioner nut, leave for 5 minutes, then crank on it again, leave, you get the idea. I was able to do this without damaging the wheel bearings.

Here is the answer... I had same exact issue and broke 2 - 1/2" breaker bars and used like a 4 or6 ft pipe. ... then took it to a shop and he broke his could not get it open and turned me away!. I bought a Harbor Freight 3/4 breaker and socket and used the long cheater pipe and that worked great. Tool did not break. No more breaking breaker bars! They even have a 1" bar if needed but 3/4 should do it. Good Luck

Longer bar.

Longer bar breaks the breaker bar faster and easier. My problem is the breaker bar breaking before the nut comes loose. A longer bar won't help with that!
