Tire size question for 2000 s70

215/50/17 would be the way to go.55 profile with this dimension on 17" could interfere with front spring holder(strut assembly).It might fit ok,just saying what can be the problem and why others are saying that they are too tall.
215/55/17 would be more appropriate for XC because it have more space around wheel archs.XC simply sits taller than regular model.

I went ahead and mounted one of the 215/55/17 tires and put it on the car to check it out myself...Didn't rub or anything...If these were new tires with new tread I would of had rubbing on the strut/bottom spring support however since they are worn they fit fine..Haven't driven it yet but here is a picture

They will bend your fenders in real world when shock apsorber will need to do it's job....to compress.
That setup would be fine with custom controlled shock movement.

Did you check on the back as well? Do the tires clear the parking brake cable?
